The first woman I ever saw run her own business lived across the road from me. Her name was Dina. Every morning I'd watch her get into her Mini and drive to the hair salon she owned on Coppins Road. She was the only woman I knew who worked for herself.

Years later I asked her how she'd done it. She told me there was never a plan. She wasn't confident she could. She was talked into the lease, took it on with three kids at home, and still only breathes out once a year, when the accountant says it's fine. "Things just kind of happened," she said, "and I went along with them." Twenty-seven years on, it's the best salon in north Essex.

That's the version of building a business nobody publishes. Not the woman on the cover who scaled to millions, but the one running something good on her own terms, whether she's six months in or twenty-seven years deep. She's who this magazine is for, and she's who it's by. Every word here comes from founders, women actually doing it, not journalists watching from the outside. Which means everyone here is someone else's proof that it can be done.

Too often, women are taught to compete, to guard their spot, to treat another woman's win as their loss. I think we've got that backwards. We rise by lifting each other up.

So we publish honest stories from women in the thick of it, and real advice from female founders a few steps ahead - the ones who've already worked it out.
