I Used ChatGPT to Help Me Run My Business for a Week, Should You?

When we look forward to the year 3000, some of us envision a highly technological society where robots, aliens, and humans coexist in towering, densely populated cities. It is a world where space travel is common and flying cars are prevalent. On the other hand, some believe that the future Earth will have become uninhabitable due to pollution and waste.

One thing we can all agree on is that our visions for the year 3000 feel out of reach right now—right? Wrong! The rapid advancements in AI technology, represented by ChatGPT and similar systems, provide a glimpse into the future possibilities envisioned for the year 3000.

For those unfamiliar with ChatGPT, it is defined by its creator [OpenAI] as "an artificial intelligence trained to assist with a variety of tasks." Specifically, ChatGPT is an AI language model designed to generate text that closely resembles human language and engage in conversations, hence the "Chat" in ChatGPT.

For the past week, Shannon—our founder— has been using ChatGPT to help her work on and in High Flying Design. Here she reveals her experience.

I’m the kind of girl who would rather go to the employee working the checkout than the self checkout machine—especially when there isn’t a queue. Sure, sometimes it’s quicker to do it myself but I value communication and community. Having a conversation with the self checkout just isn’t possible, though I’m sure it probably will be one day. I mean, isn’t ChatGPT just the start of our journey of communicating with machines? Imagine the impact of this in all contexts…

But anyway, back to business. This week I hired ChatGPT as my personal assistant.

Going into this I wasn’t sure of its capabilities, and if you’re here reading this, maybe you too are unsure. I figured this is the perfect place to start—like in any meeting—with an agenda, to-do list or maybe even better described as a job description of sorts outlining the tasks I’d like ChatGPT to complete.

  • To come up with engaging headlines

  • To brainstorm Instagram content ideas

  • To recommend relevant social hashtags

  • To create blog post outlines

  • To proof read and edit copy for upcoming in-flight magazine articles

  • To undertake desk research

Please note: When choosing tasks for ChatGPT, I thought about what I saw as low priority or quick wins that wouldn’t take me too long if ChatGPT did a bad job. I did not want to use ChatGPT for high value tasks like writing from scratch.

Key takeaways from using ChatGPT for business:

  1. You'll need to brief the AI like you do a human: with clear and concise instructions

  2. When you aren't specific in your requests, the provided output may not align with your expectations

When this happens, you can ask for alternatives by providing more context. However, it's important to note that ChatGPT lacks creative originality and generates responses based on patterns and existing data.

  3. While yes, you can instruct ChatGPT to write in a certain tone of voice, it will never replace a professional copywriter because it lacks emotional intelligence

I recently invested in web copywriting services by Giada Nizzoli, the brand messaging consultant & website copywriter for female entrepreneurs. Giada's words cut through the noise, connect, and convert. I didn't think for one second to choose ChatGPT over a professional copywriter, but I know that other business owners are. And to you, let me remind you of the popular phrase "buy cheap, buy twice".

  4. Burnout is real, even for AI

When ChatGPT receives a high volume of requests, there is a pretty big delay. But don't worry, this only happened to me once.

  5. If ChatGPT had the ability to access real-time information*, it would change the way I use Google Search forever.

One of the strengths of ChatGPT was its ability to provide me with valuable information. It often felt like ChatGPT had sifted through numerous pages of Google Search, retrieving the most relevant and useful information at an impressive speed. This capability has streamlined my writing process for evergreen blog posts and in-flight magazines.

*At the moment, ChatGPT’s knowledge is based on the data available up to September 2021. I suspect accessing real-time information will be one of the ways AI systems like ChatGPT will evolve.

AI technology, represented by ChatGPT, is continuously evolving and the future holds even more exciting possibilities. Where do you think the future of AI will lead? Will you be leveraging AI alongside human expertise to boost your business efficiency? Take a moment to envision the possibilities and explore how embracing AI technology can unlock new levels of productivity and innovation in your own business.
